The bikini top is the trickiest piece of swimwear to get right. The chest gets all the variation in shape, support, coverage, and lift, while the bottom (mostly) just has to fit your hips. So if you have ever stood in a fitting room wondering why a top that looked cute on the hanger fits like a sad sandwich on you, the answer is almost always cup-style mismatch, not your body.
Here is the kindest, simplest guide we know to picking the right bikini top by cup size.
First, what to measure
Before anything, grab a soft measuring tape and write down two numbers:
- Bust: the fullest part of your bust, tape parallel to the floor.
- Underbust: directly under your bust, snug but not tight.
The difference between the two tells you your cup. The underbust number tells you your band size, which most swimwear translates to S, M, L. Our full chart lives on the sizing guide if you want exact numbers.
If you are AA to B cup
You have the most styles open to you and the fewest support concerns. The fun part is leaning into shapes that build the look you want.
Triangle bikini tops are the classic AA to B move. Soft, no underwire, ties at the neck and back. They are flattering, fully adjustable, and look effortless. Our Sweet Escape Bikini Top is the triangle move in a pastel rainbow stripe and our Wave Break Bikini Top is the same shape in solid aqua with a sweet shell flower detail.
Halter tops create lift and shape without padding. The neck tie pulls the bust into the body, giving a fuller look. Great for AA and A cups who want a little visual help.
If you are C cup
You can pull off pretty much every style, with a couple of small adjustments.
Balconette tops are the sweet spot for C cups. They have underwire support without the heavy structure of a D plus top, and the wider neckline shows more decollete. Our Weekend Spot Bikini Top is a balconette in a happy bubble dot print and our Tan Session Bikini Top is balconette in coral paisley with scalloped pink trim.
Underwire scoop neck tops also work beautifully on C cups. They lift, they support, and they keep things in place all day. Our Checked Out Bikini Top is an underwire scoop in a coral plaid that just feels good on.
If you are D cup or above
The single most important thing for a D plus bust is real support. Triangle tops and string bikinis tend to dig and shift without enough structure under the bust. Look for these features:
- Underwire for shape and lift
- Wide, adjustable straps instead of thin spaghetti
- A band or center gore that sits flat against your chest
- Hook and eye back closures when possible (these let you dial in band fit independently of cup fit)
Balconette and underwire scoop neck styles will be your best friends. Skip tops that tie at the back unless they also have hidden underwire. Our Tan Session, Weekend Spot, and Checked Out tops all give D plus busts real structure.
If you are between cup sizes
Always size up on the cup, not the band. A cup that is too small spills out and creates the quad-boob effect that nobody wants. A cup that is slightly roomy can be wrangled with adjustable straps. Sizing up gives you options. Sizing down gives you regret.
One more rule that changes everything
Tops and bottoms do not have to be the same size. We sell every Bikini Break piece separately exactly for this reason. If your top is M and your bottom is L, grab one of each. Same print, same set, two sizes. No more deciding which half of the bikini gets to fit while the other half suffers.
